THE PLAYERS

PETER WRIGHT

  • Peter Wright arrives in Blackpool on the crest of a wave with three tournaments wins within the space of a week. Snakebite has won 18 consecutive matches on his way to winning the German Darts Masters along with back-to-back Players Championship successes in Barnsley only a matter of days before the start of the Matchplay.
  • 2017 World Matchplay runner-up Wright has reached the semi-finals in three of the last four years and has not failed to reach the quarter-finals at Winter Gardens since 2014.
  • Snakebite endured a very disappointing 2019 Premier League campaign with only two wins from his 16 matches, but he bounced back by winning the World Cup of Darts for Scotland with Gary Anderson in June and has now followed it up by winning three tournaments in a row.

VINCENT VAN DER VOORT

  • Formerly a top 16 player, Vincent van der Voort has slipped out of the top 32 and is featuring at the Matchplay for the first time since 2016.
  • The big Dutchman’s record at the Matchplay does not make for good reading with four consecutive first-round exits since he last won a game here in 2011.
  • His last good run into the latter stages of a PDC major ranking tournament came in October 2015 when he reached the quarter-finals of the World Grand Prix.

THE PREDICTION

Peter Wright cast aside any question marks over a big decline in form after a disappointing Premier League campaign with success at the World Cup of Darts and with three tournament wins in the week leading into the Matchplay, he will be brimming with confidence. Snakebite has reached at least the semi-finals in three of the last four years at Winter Gardens and will fancy his chances of at least reaching the final. Van der Voort has never looked comfortable at the Matchplay and does not look in good enough form to suggest he can trouble Wright in round one.
